Carpal tunnel syndrome

A syndrome characterized by a sensation of numbness, tingling, or even pain in the fingers. Carpal tunnel syndrome typically manifests at night or in the morning upon waking. It is caused by compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel, on the front side of the wrist, and can sometimes be complicated by paralysis of the fingers. It most commonly affects women during pregnancy or menopause, but can be triggered by any condition that causes stenosis of the carpal tunnel, such as synovitis, myxedema, acromegaly, amyloidosis, or traumatic deformation of the carpal bones, among others.
