Loss of control over the anal sphincter, which is no longer able to retain feces. It can have various causes, some mechanical (destruction of the anal sphincter due to an infection, a tumor, or a wound), and others neurological (severing of the nerves that control the sphincter during surgery, paralysis, or brain disease).
