Scarring

Spontaneous repair of tissue after an injury, which typically concludes with the formation of a scar. Scarring is a set of local defense phenomena that begin in response to an assault such as a wound, burn, illness, or surgical intervention.

Scarring unfolds in several stages: the first is blood coagulation, which stops the bleeding. White blood cells in the blood remove dead cells. Later, the surviving cells begin to multiply, giving rise to new tissue, the appearance of which depends on the location of the injury.
