Epicondylitis

Epicondylitis is an inflammation of the tendons that attach to the epicondyle (a bony prominence on the lower end of the humerus) on the inner part of the elbow. Many forearm muscles, particularly those responsible for extending and rotating the hand, are attached to the epicondyle. These muscles undergo significant strain during certain sports, like tennis and golf, as well as in various typical daily and professional activities. In sports medicine, epicondylitis is also called ‘tennis elbow.’ It can sometimes arise after a severe trauma, but it is more often due to repeated microtraumas, overuse of the elbow area, or frequent repetition of specific movements. It is characterized by pain on the outer side of the elbow; in more serious cases, it can make everyday actions, like holding a bottle or opening a door, impossible.
